Guitar HarmonicsToday I wanted to teach you a little about how to play harmonics on the guitar.  Harmonics refers to a bell like sound that can be heard when lightly placing your finger over certain frets on the fret board.  There are several interesting playing techniques that can incorporate these sounds.  The great thing about harmonics is that even a beginner guitarist can try them out easily.  However, I put this in the advanced category because some of the pinch or artificial harmonics techniques can become a bit difficult.

This weeks lesson is presented by Brad Henecke, a JamPlay.com instructor.  Brad teaches 3 common chords that every guitarist should know.  If you get these three chords down you are well on your way to playing literally thousands of songs.  This is a great place to start in order to begin playing songs almost immediately which will make your practice times much more enjoyable since you won’t only be playing scales and memorizing the fretboard (although those things are important too).

You will learn the A chord, the D Chord, and the E chord.  While these won’t turn you into an instant pro guitarist, these chords are essential to know as you continue to progress in learning to play guitar.

Learn to Play GuitarIf you are getting frustrated while trying to learn to play guitar then you may be thinking about smashing it into something just like a sledgehammer.  It’s easy to want to give up when you try to play the first few practice sessions and all you are left with is tired sore fingers and a ringing in your ears.  Almost every musician faces this obstacle at some point and it is those that overcome the temporary discomfort or the boredom from practicing the same piece over and over that become accomplished musicians.  So I present to you five reasons not to use your guitar as a sledgehammer!  :-)

1. It’s Really not That Difficult – Ok, I know it may seem like you will never play that first chord without the strings making an awful buzzing sound.  You may think that the scale, or lead riff, or barre chord that you are trying to get down is impossible for you but I guarantee you that it is not.  If you are just starting, just know that it only takes a couple of weeks of regular practice to build good calluses on your fingers and to pick up your first couple of simple songs.  If you have been learning for a while and have hit a wall then you should know that one day things will just snap and your fingers will start cooperating even on the most complicated song or guitar piece you are trying to play.

2. It Makes You Smarter – How would you like to improve the functionality of your brain while playing music rather than studying in books?  Not only do those who learn to play guitar or another instrument experience improvements in finger dexterity and the ability to decipher sounds more easily but they also have greater verbal capabilities and overall perform better academically.

The video for this week comes from Chris Liepe of Jamplay.com who is teaching about barre and minor chords. This is a great addition to last weeks video which covered some beginner chords. Chris shows the basic barre chord forms that can be used to move up and down the guitar neck. But first he covers a few open minor chords. Minor guitar chords usually have a duller or sadder sound than major chords and can add a much different tone to part of a song. Barre chords are a great way to get a stronger more direct sound and are often used when playing electric guitar but also for acoustic as well.

Online MetronomeOne often overlooked aspect of playing guitar, especially to beginners, is keeping an even tempo and rhythm. There are a few ways to help you accomplish this. First, you can play along with a band that has a good drummer keeping the time and tempo for the band. This is also helpful in teaching you to be aware of the other instruments and vocals around you as well so that you become better at playing along with a band.

Don’t have a band to play along with?  Well, you could also play along with a recording of the song that you are practicing if you are practicing a song. This is a great technique for learning a new song and keeping the proper time and tempo.  But what if you are just practicing scales or a simple chord pattern?
