Being a guitarist that has been playing for well over 10 years, I get a lot of people asking me what kind of guitar they should buy to start out with. The answer really depends on the student. The reason there are so many guitar models is because different guitarists prefer different sounds out of their guitars. But to tell the truth, the specific tone of a guitar isn’t as important when you are first starting. One thing I do tell beginner guitarists is to spend enough to get a quality guitar but not to go overboard either until you decide playing guitar is right for you. The price range I typically shoot for is between $100 and $250 USD. An acoustic-electric guitar is basically an acoustic guitar with a pickup so that it can be played either plugged into an amp or unplugged. I have included some Acoustic-Electric models below from Same Day Music that fit the beginner price range. You can also check out my acoustic page if you don’t need to plug into an amplifier.
