When I started playing guitar, there was online guitar instruction but it was geared towards those who had already learned the basics. These online guitar lessons did not have sound, for the most part, no videos and very few illustrations. As a beginner, they frustrated me. For instance, how was I supposed to know what a 4/4 time signature sounded like as opposed to a 4/6 if I’d never heard any that I could identify? There was some information but no context to put it in. Taking a beginner guitar lesson online was an exercise in futility.
Guitar lessons online have come a long way since the early 90’s! There are videos that you can pause or slow down, sound files, easy to read tablature and illustrations to show you exactly where to place your fingers, the proper way to strum a chord and even sound files that help you tune your guitar!

I have been playing guitar for well over 10 years and I have tried just about every method out there to try to improve my skills. From some methods, I have learned much. Other methods I tried did not work out near as well. I have also had the privilege of being on the teaching end and have discovered that not all students have the same learning style. Here I will describe some of the best learning methods I have found for both the beginner and intermediate guitarist.
In recent years learning has become increasingly more accessible with video on the internet becoming more popular. You can actually learn guitar online from a well qualified instructor and from the comfort of your home. What method you take when learning guitar online just depends on what you want to get out of the lessons.

Many people want to learn to play guitar, but they go about it the wrong way – they ignore the usefulness of video guitar lessons. This is easy enough to understand. Guitar is, after all, a musical instrument so it makes sense that people would focus on the auditory above all else. But did you know that auditory learners only make up a small percentage of the population? The fact is that many visual learners miss out on their opportunity to learn to play the guitar simply because they aren’t receiving the right kind of guitar lesson. Videos offer a new way to add a new dimension to learning to play – as we hear the music being taught to us, we also have the helpful visuals to guide us along. The position of fingers on the fret board, how they move, which finger plays which string – it’s all right there to see!

You’ve probably seen a number of those “Learn Guitar” DVDs before, and if you’re like most people, you’ve probably wondered if they’re at all worthwhile. Are these discs really the answer to people who want to learn to play the guitar? Are guitar lessons on DVD really all they’re cracked up to be? The answer, interestingly, is yes! A guitar lesson DVD is an excellent way to pick up on some of the most critical aspects of learning to play guitar – aspects that you simply can’t pick up from text or an audio course. Experts will tell you that the best way to learn guitar is by having an instructor right there in the room with you. Well, if you can’t have that, which of those things sounds closest to it? A dry old text, a tinny audio course, or a robust video where you can see a real human being addressing you directly and showing you all that you need to know about guitar?

Visual Learning and Guitar Playing
People learn in different ways and many people just don’t learn well from text or audio. This is fine – such people are called visual learners, which means that they learn best when material is presented in a visual way. If a visual learner wants to learn to play guitar, DVD is an excellent choice because it allows he or she to really see what’s going on in a concrete way. If a visual learner can see the person addressing them, watch their posture, the way they hold the instrument, the way their hands are positioned, they will pick up on such things much more quickly.
